Overview
Mittal Steel South Africa is the African continent’s largest steel producer, with a steelmaking capacity in excess of 7 million tons per annum.
Mittal Steel, the South African producer’s controlling shareholder, reached a 51% stake in the company in June 2004. This was preceded by a business assistance agreement between the two companies, concluded in early 2002, in terms of which Mittal Steel provided assistance to the South African company for a three-year period in exchange for shares – provided that certain cost-saving thresholds were met.
Established in 1928, Ispat Iscor been forged into a modern, highly competitive supplier of flat and long products to the domestic and global markets.
Mittal Steel South Africa has four steelmaking operations – Vanderbijlpark Steel and Saldanha Steel (flat products) and Newcastle Steel and Vereeniging Steel (long products). It also has a metallurgical by-products processing division, Coke & Chemicals. The company owns 6.25 million tonnes a year of high quality iron ore resources through a procurement contract with the South African mining company, Kumba Resources.
Its Vanderbijlpark Steel operations produces 3.5 million tons of liquid steel a year, which constitutes 84 per cent of South Africa’s flat steel requirements. Extensive re-engineering of this operation has anchored its position among the world’s most efficient producers.
Saldanha Steel is a state-of-the-art mill commissioned in 1998 with a design capacity of 1.4 million tons per annum. Thin and ultra thin gauge material makes up the majority of output. Saldanha Steel is the only steel mill in the world to have successfully combined the Corex/Midrex process into a continuous casting chain – thereby eliminating the need for coke ovens and blast furnaces, making the plant a world leader in emission control.
In long products, Mittal Steel South Africa exports around 40 per cent of its annual 1.9 million tons of production. Of that total, 1.65 million tons is rolled profile products, 95,000 tons seamless tube and 185,000 tons forged products, billets and ingots.
